There are times when I feel that I'm
building a mansion
inside a mountain.

I push outward and upward at my roof,
constantly cutting back rock,
to forge my walls.

Then there are times I feel like the mountain
is changing, moving beneath my feet,
all around me as I build.

The lights go out, and as I sit in the blackness,
I wonder, have I drawn lots on a
bad mountain?

The range is right, that I know.
I ask myself, "if this mountain collapses with my building,
why bother having started?

When do I quit digging this hole?
When have I put in too much time,
such that I cannot move elsewhere if I'm wrong?

I've found tunnels.
Have others made them? Are they safe?
Are the mountains to which they lead safer than the one I try to call my own?
